How many packs of hair do you actually need for braids?

"Is 2 bundles enough for a full head?" is the question we are asked most. So we read 30 product listings from 8 brands selling human hair for braiding, to find out what a "pack" actually contains.

Searches for this question usually arrive with a number attached: is 2 bundles enough, is 5 packs enough. That framing is the problem. A pack is not a unit of measurement. It is a container, and its size is set by whoever sold it to you.

To make that concrete: 30 product listings from eight brands selling human hair for braiding, crochet and boho styles were read, and what each one states about pack weight was recorded.

Every one of the eight brands states a pack weight on its product pages. And those weights range from 50g to 213g, a four-fold gap between the lightest declared pack and the heaviest.

Why this matters

"Two packs" means roughly 100g from ygwigs, 120g from lollyhair, or 426g from lockbraids. Same sentence, three different amounts of hair. The number of packs tells you almost nothing until you know the weight of one.

What "two packs" means at five brands

  • ygwigs · 50g pack100g
  • lollyhair · 60g pack120g
  • eayonhair · 100g pack200g
  • heatfreehair · 120g pack240g
  • lockbraids · 213g pack426g

Same sentence, five different amounts. Pack weights as declared on each brand's product listing, read September 2026. Bar length is proportional to grams.

None of them left it out. Every brand in the sample published a weight. They simply disagree about what one is. That is the whole problem in a single line: the number exists, it is just not comparable. If a listing really does not say, ask before you buy. More often the figure is right there, and the work is converting it into something you can compare.

Rather than leave you with "it depends", here is what we know about our own product.

Every Tressifine pack is 100g. That is confirmed with our supplier, not inferred from a listing. So when we say two packs, we mean 200g.

We also asked our supplier how many packs a full head of braids typically takes. Their guidance: about 2 packs for a shorter style and about 3 for a longer one.

What that guidance does not tell you

The supplier did not define where "shorter" ends and "longer" begins. We are not going to invent an inch threshold to fill that gap. We have not verified one, and it would move with your braid size and hair density anyway. Treat 2–3 packs as a starting point for a conversation with your braider, not a rule.

Working in grams removes the biggest source of confusion, but it does not remove the rest. What still moves your number:

Length

The amount of hair you need does not rise in a straight line with length. Going from mid-back to waist can take noticeably more than a proportional increase.

Braid size

This is the one people underestimate. Small knotless braids use far more hair than the same head in larger braids, more sections, and each one still has to look full.

Texture

A tight curl reads as more volume per gram than a loose wave, but it also compresses differently once installed. The same 100g can look fuller or slimmer depending on the wave pattern.

Find the pack weight, not the pack count

Whatever brand you are looking at, look for a number in grams on the product page. If there is not one, that is your answer about how much they want you to know.

Convert to grams

Multiply packs by pack weight. Two 50g packs is 100g. Two 213g packs is 426g. Now you are comparing like with like across brands.

Ask your braider about grams, not packs

If your braider gives you a number, ask whether they mean packs or grams, and how big the packs they normally use are. This is the single most useful question in the whole process.

If you are between two numbers, take the higher one

Leftover hair is a far smaller problem than running out halfway. Keep the remainder for a repair or a future set.

Is 2 bundles enough for a full head?

It depends entirely on what a bundle weighs. In our sample of eight brands, pack weights ran from 50g to 213g, so "two bundles" could mean 100g or 426g. Multiply packs by pack weight first, then compare that figure against your braider's number.

Is 5 packs of braiding hair enough?

Five packs is a lot in any weight, but how much depends on the pack. At 100g per pack that is 500g, which is more than a typical full head needs unless you are doing very long, very fine braids. If someone told you five packs without mentioning grams, ask what weight their packs are.

How much is 4 packs of braiding hair?

That depends on the brand and the length: pack pricing changes with length, and longer lengths cost more per pack. On the product page, the price for each length and pack combination is listed. If you are budgeting the whole job rather than one pack, we split the bill into its parts in what braids actually cost.

How many packs of human hair for braiding?

Our own supplier's guidance for a full head is about 2 packs for a shorter style and about 3 for a longer one, and our packs are 100g. They did not define where shorter ends, so treat it as a starting point rather than a rule.

What can I do with two packs of braiding hair?

Two 100g packs (200g) covers a shorter full set, a boho style where most of the braid is your own hair, or a top-up and repair on an existing install. It is also enough for a partial set if you are not braiding the whole head.

What this guide is based on

Competitor listings. We read 30 product listings across eight brands selling human hair for braiding, crochet and boho styles, and recorded what each states about pack weight, length options and construction. All eight declared a pack weight; those are the ones in the table above. We did not independently weigh these products. The figures are as published by each brand. The listings were read in September 2026 and may change, so always check the current listing.

Our own product. Tressifine packs are 100g, confirmed with our supplier. Our length options are 12–30 inch. The pack-count guidance (about 2 for shorter, about 3 for longer) also comes from our supplier and is a starting point, not a verified universal rule.

What we did not do. We did not test these products ourselves, and we did not survey customers. We do not publish a fixed inch-to-pack formula, because we have not verified one that holds across textures, lengths and braid sizes.
